Consciousness as a living structure.
Some orienting inquiries:
- What does contemporary metaphysics have to offer us in the way of clarifying cognitive constructs when it comes to the topic of structures of consciousness?
- What are some of the “universally” understood symbolic structural forms that have emerged from the evolution of human consciousness?
- How is the esoteric knowledge of metaphysical constructs related to the embodied experience of being a human in the 21st century human civilisational context?
- Where are the parallel understandings explicated in the contemporary scientific literature, and technological developments, what experimental evidence is there, what does that tell us?
- When we consider these findings in light of each other, what working hypothesis can be generated that serves the further conscious participation in the process of coming to a genuine “universal” understanding of the nature of reality?
WIP, please submit any relevant insights, or links thereto in the comments to this post, and with your help, this proposed thesis will grow and ultimately serve the future of our species on this planet, thank you.
Thank you for sharing the challenges of Complexity you’ve encountered in your work. I greatly appreciate your observations. To further my independent studies in Systems Thinking I’ve picked up a tool called Pattern Dynamics. The pattern language contains an eloquent set of symbols which are multifaceted, and overlapping in ways that reveal the interconnected dynamics of systems. It also places a strong emphasis on sustainability.
What you said about our need for a balanced view of complexity that includes both humanities and science made me think of Pattern Dynamics. Tim Winton, the founder of PD, suggests it’s important we notice how culture shapes our understandings, beliefs, and values because they’re ultimately what create meaning in our social systems. So when you speak of humanities and science both playing an equal role in Complexity, I believe you are correct. Especially because both will be needed if we are to adapt to environmental shifts.
I thought it would be prudent to begin applying Pattern Dynamics to a post you shared on Complexity. You made it clear that Complexity is not a single body of knowledge like Physics or Economics or Philosophy, yet it often slants to the ‘scientific’ approach through the stringent application of Mathematics. As you’ve pointed out, these rigorous scientific experiments tend to select variables, or parameters which only behave as expected under specified conditions.

A small group of us has begun exploring the real time collaboration environment called Rizzoma. We are developing processes and protocols in building a Holarchy of engagement which will enhance our capacity to manage the Complexity of the Growth of a metacognitive Structure.
As we Iterate our practice we give real time and asynchronous Feedback to the System under development. The Synergy between participants is supporting our collective Adaptation to the new online environment, as well as the Emergence of a Seed Pattern. This will support our ongoing experience of the Evolution of collaborative play/work and the Emergence of the collective genius which informs the System.
We are using the Pattern Dynamics Language to enhance our understanding of the Process, and to help define areas of Resonance as well as identify the arising of aspects of Polarity. Utilising these tools together in real time and providing Feedback as we progress is allowing us to Capture the value of multiple perspectives. When we focus our Energy toward achieving Harmony in our interactions and developing a Resource that adds value to knowledge generation and information Exchange, the Flow/Stores aspect of Polarity is optimised for the benefit of all involved.
We are documenting our ongoing process through posts such as this, both here and elsewhere as a contribution to the Emergence of a new human capcity for group cohesion and effective action.
The Infinite Recursion of Clay – Jon David Gemma
Pattern Dynamics informs us that Creativity is about “novel adaptations and the emergence of new forms of organisation within a system.” In our group’s investigation of metacognition, Glistening Deepwater suggests we inquire “how does the way I am looking at ____ make it look the way it does?”
Michael Gaio filled in the blank with “metacognition” itself, which we noted triggers an infinite recursion. Gaio sees recursion as the foundation for cognition, leading toward “the eventual ergodic quality of transposition of one thing to another”. If I understand correctly, in the Wikipedia entry on ergodic theory, the ergodic describes how a “system that evolves for a long time ‘forgets’ its initial state.”
Such a state change seems akin to Bifurcation, which is said to “generate new forms of order out of breakdown.” Zaq Moser describes his experience of infinite recursion leading to what he quotes as being a “break through” into a “dream space”. Josh Deveraux, creatively utilizes what he calls “iterating seeds,” to more expediently compress the complexity of “all emergent particulars.” John Kellden describes what he experiences as “spiral awareness morphing into toroidal service and back again.”
By looking at group’s discussion of metacognition through the lens of Pattern Dynamics, I noticed a variety of Patterns of Creativity: Seed, Bifurcation, Adaptation, Growth, Emergence, Evolution, and Elegance. I wonder if any of the other members identified patterns, and if so, what?
Glistening Deepwater encourages us to keep evolving beyond self reinforcing delusions, by asking “what else is possible?” I suspect metacognitive adaptation will become ever more accessible as we continue to ask such questions and engage without limiting our Creativity.

I have a complex, multi-dimensional life. I have many factors to take into account in every decision I make, and I have the challenge of remaining focussed on task with long term projects while life erupts unpredictably around me. I will frame this in terms of Pattern Dynamics to help me develop a practice of doing so based in my immediate awareness of life and relationships.
To remain grounded in the Source of inspiration and perseverance required to be effective in multiple domains simultaneously, I engage a disciplined meditation practice. I also enact daily yoga practice. These routines set up a Rhythm which sustains a conscious body-mind. With this connection to Source sustained I can engage the Dynamics of interacting with various emergent forms of Exchange, both in relation to the people in my life, and with the various information flows that I pay attention to.
I often find that during Exchange Dynamics, Polarity arises. Opportunities to reflect on aspects of an Exchange which are not immediately apparent from my individual perspective are revealed this way and an opening for Creativity in response can arise as a result. Engaging Creativity in order to reveal deeper nuances in Exchange allows for broader more inclusive understandings to arise between myself and others as we partake in the Dynamics of our interactions. Polarity can be met in a variety of manners depending on the content of the Exchange, and the underlying Structure of the individual alignments to their Source of inspiration can be revealed through engaging Polarity with Creativity.
The Structure and Rhythm of my life and work are what enable me to embody a coherent presence in multiple domains. My alignment with Source flows into my creative expressions which I present to the world and the people around me as a representation (Structure of identity) of the being that I perceive myself to be. The Structure of self-identity which I align with Source, is a highly disciplined and yet totally surrendered nexus of feelings, thoughts and actions which interacts with the world through various means, both direct and indirect.
Self-reflection through observation of Exchange Dynamics, paying particular attention to instances of Polarity allow for a Dynamics of creative restructuring at the self-identity level, on an ongoing basis, in relation to the requirements of the currently arising situation. A deeply aligned Structure of self-identity with Source allows for a fluidity of responsive surface Structure of identity as a person in the world.
This blog post is part of my learning journey (and others) within the Metacogs peer learning network. We have come together online to form a self organising learning group that seeks to help each other learn ‘meta-cognative’ (thinking about thinking) tools and understandings. That’s how I understand it. To start with we set up a Facebook group oriented around this purpose. Then we set up this blog and lately some of us in this group have been meeting in online video conference calls via Google+ Hangouts. These have been recorded and you can access them on this blog. We are using and exploring a range of meta-cognative tools, including PatternDynamics, which I have developed as a systems thinking tool for enhancing the enduring health and functionality of human organisations at any scale and of any type. The premise behind PatternDynamics is that sustainability and forming a thriving planetary civilisation is dependent for the most part on people and how we collectively make decisions about how we treat the environment, social capital ect. So PatternDynamics (PD) takes the patterns nature uses for sustainable organisation of its systems and translates them into a set of symbols that we humans can use to understand, communicate and design using the same patterns of organisation. This is proposed as a method for giving us humans the same capacity we find for enduring health and evolution in natural systems.
The first PD Pattern (see www.patterndynamics.com.au for Pattern Charts and descriptions) we are exploring is Source.

The Source of who we are together holds a space, which for me feels like home. Let’s start by remembering that Source is the core of the Pattern Dynamics. It is an Energy which I feel stimulates a sense of shared purpose. It is a Power in our consciousness which expands like a sphere of possibility. It is a safe MetaCog space in which we can play.
Those of us in the MetaCog space, seem to sense something similar: this Source. It holds many patterns, which we’re beginning to explore. It appears to be helping us self-organize into a model of a healthy planetary society.
We’ve come together around these patterns which might accelerate our learning process. We’re sharing content that expresses how we dynamically relate to what seems our Source-identity. In time our purpose(s) become more easily expressed and embodied if this MetaCog space truly is our home.
